Breaking Barriers To Effective Communication – What They Are And How To Overcome Them
|
Sometimes when we are trying to communicate with others, we find the task difficult (if not almost impossible). When this happens, we wonder what happened. We ask ourselves what went wrong. And we try to find out what we can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
One of the best ways is to learn the barriers to effective communication and then discover ways to overcome these barriers. Here are some of the barriers to effective communication and ways you can get around them.
If you are going to succeed in life, you must have effective communication skills. Also, you must learn ways to engage others so they will effectively communicate with you as well. First, you must understand communication. We all communicate in a number of different ways, for a number of different reasons, at different times, and in different locations. Some of the communications are personal, others professional. Communication is the exchange of thoughts and ideas and we use it for various purposes. Communication is used to convey information, gather information and to persuade others.
A major barrier to effective communication is the muddled or mixed message. Sometimes, we are not sure we understand what is being said or conveyed. The best way to overcome this barrier is to simply ask questions. Communication consists of talking and listening. As the listener, it is your responsibility to make sure you understand the message. If you don’t, or the message seems to be going in two different directions, simply ask questions until you fully understand.
Physical barriers are also a hindrance to communication. In this day and age, we are often confronted with physical barriers to effective communication in a number of places we do business. Due to the increased threats of robbery or other crimes, there are not many places of business that don’t have walls between them and the customers. While these safety practices are needed to protect the workers and the businesses, they make communication difficult sometimes. One way to overcome this is to acknowledge the necessity of the measures. When you approach a window that is closed off, speak loudly enough to be heard. Also, if you don’t understand the response, ask the individual to repeat it.
