Appearance is probably one of the main areas in which people feel low self esteem. The media portrays what is considered the “ideal” in beauty; however, this is not a representative view of the average person in the world. Women and young girls feel a great deal of pressure to live up to the media’s standards of beauty; however, this standard does not represent the majority of the population. Since most people are unable to live up to this almost impossible standard, feelings of inadequacy are rampant, and this becomes one of the big causes of low self esteem.
A wonderful way to combat this is to look at you in a forgiving light rather than a critical light. Look at your good qualities and focus on those, while at the same time recognizing that it’s your unique look that makes you the person you are.
Family and friends have a great impact on a person and can be one of the possible causes of low self esteem. Because these are people who are important to you, their words have a great amount of impact. If your friends and family make you feel like you are inadequate, you will suffer from low self esteem.
One way to combat this is to be honest with your friends and family when they do hurt your feelings or make you feel bad. By asserting yourself and letting them know that is how they made you feel, you are taking control of your self esteem.
Other factors that can impact your self esteem include your job, illnesses, and other areas that are beyond your control. Again, the causes of low self esteem are as unique as the people who experience the things that cause reduced self esteem. By look at the causes of low self esteem, you can combat them and take control of your life, thereby boosting your own self esteem and celebrating the wonderful person you are.
