Dealing With Criticism Using These Strategies And Techniques
|
Dealing with criticism is one of the most important things that any person can learn in their life.
It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, male or female, or a beginner at something or a seasoned professional, criticism is going to come at you time and time again.
If you don’t know the proper ways of dealing with criticism, then you are going to be faced with issues such as low self esteem, trouble breaking through another level of experience, and winning in the game of life.
Here are some thoughts and techniques that you can use when dealing with criticism. Not all of them are going to be right for everyone, but we’re pretty confident that there will be at least one technique for dealing with criticism that will work for everyone.
Strategy 1: Gauge the type of criticism you’ve received. Is the criticism constructive or simply negative from start to finish? You should be able to tell very quickly. Of course, when you are first reading or hearing about the criticism, you might not be able to focus on any positive attributes, so step away from it and don’t think about it. Then, when you are calmer, more rational, then read it over again.
Does the criticism point out some of the positives in you? Or does it only focus on all of the negative aspects of your work or you as a person? If it’s the latter, then you don’t need to think any more about it. That negative criticism is not worth the time it takes to even read it.
True criticism should have some basis in positive aspects, things that may not be working out for you at the moment, but then offering advice on how to improve.
Strategy 2: Remember that everyone was a beginner once. This doesn’t mean that you are necessarily a beginner at something. It just means that at some point in everyone’s life, they were a beginner at everything they did, too. And no one is perfect. The criticism may not be what you wanted to hear, but there are usually clues about what you can do to make yourself better as a person. Focus on those.
Strategy 3: Determine what experience the person critiquing you has. Lots of people enjoy criticizing others, even if they don’t have any real experience in the field themselves. Criticizing others makes people feel better about themselves. It may not be right for them to do that, but that’s the way people are. If you allow what other people say about you to affect you in a negative way, then you are allowing them to hurt you at a very basic level.
Dealing with criticism is a difficult thing for anyone to do, but it’s important that every single person take some time and think about where the criticism is coming from, who it is coming from, and what the purpose of that criticism is.
When you dissect it, then you can pull the positives from it and work from there. Always keep your chin up and smile when dealing with criticism. You’ll be a winner every single time.
