Dealing With Depression Begins With You And Your Attitude
|
Stand Upright And Smile
When in a depressed state, a person’s posture and body language will generally reflect his or her fragile psyche – stooped or hunched, slow movements, lack of zest, etc, are some common indicators. Now, you’ll be surprised at how much better you could feel just by simply standing straight up and lifting your head up high. While you are at it, throw in a smile, too!
Believe That Life IS Still Beautiful
Life beats us down, smashes us in and drags us around from time to time. Yet, beneath all that, life is still beautiful, and certainly worth living. Indeed, there is so much to savor. As you struggle with depression, keep this realization somewhere at the back of your mind, to give you hope of a better tomorrow. Things will get better, and life will once again be good – believe it!
Learn From Previous Depressive Episodes
Once a person has been hit by depression, he is likely to feel depressed again sometime in the future. But because you have beaten depression once, you are better equipped to fend off a relapse, before it really takes root and becomes more serious.
What were the circumstances which led to the first depression attack? How did you feel, and what symptoms were you afflicted by? What did you use to finally overcome depression? What worked for you, and what didn’t? How likely are you to face the same circumstances again? What would possibly make you vulnerable to going through another depressive phase?
Going through these questions and their answers in your mind could help equip you for future battles ahead.
Be Kind To Yourself
Learn to be kind to yourself, not to be too hard on yourself, and to forgive yourself for any mistakes you have made. Also learn to accept your shortcomings. Being human, we are all imperfect, and we all commit countless mistakes in our lives.
Patience And Perseverance Are Key
Every little bit that you do will count, and will contribute to you beating depression. Patience and perseverance are key.
Set realistic goals and targets and take things a step at a time. Depression didn’t develop suddenly, and there are probably numerous contributing factors and causes, so it’s not unreasonable to think that your journey of recovery would also take some time rather than take place overnight.
