People don’t often consider the importance of time management exercises to their daily life, but as the modern world becomes more hectic and fast-paced, time management becomes ever more important.

There is never going to be more than 24 hours in a day, even though you’ll often find that there seems to be more and more to get done within those short 24 hours.

That’s why time management exercises are vital to getting done everything that you need to get done. Try the following time management exercises if you feel as though you’re having trouble completing all of the tasks that you need to get done on a daily basis.


Keep track of your time

The most important of all time management exercises is to keep track of your time. When we wake up in the morning, we tend to look at the day in one of two ways. Either we think that we have plenty of time to get done everything that needs to be done, or we stress about not having enough time. But are we using our time wisely?

Take a journal notebook and begin to track your time throughout the day. Note down what time you wake up in the morning, how long you spend getting dressed and cleaned, eating, and prepping for the day. Write down how long your commute is to work. How long does it take you to get from your car to the office? Every little detail here matters. Jot down every time you take a break, even if it’s five minutes leaning back in your chair.

This will help you see whether you are wasting more time than you realize.


Begin to estimate how long tasks will take

We often underestimate how long certain tasks will take. The reason is simple: we want to believe that we are going to have more time in the day to get things done, so we try to cram in more than we can actually do.

For this time management exercise, practice estimating how long each task should take you, then keep track of how long it actually took you. When you begin to see a pattern of underestimating, then add more time to each estimate in the future. When you become efficient at estimating how long tasks will take, you will actually be able to get more done throughout the day.


Know the difference between plans and goals

Plans are the things that we would like to do, if we have time to get them done. Goals are the things that we need or want to do. It may sound like a subtle difference, but they are completely unique.

Establish goals and plans separately. Then, manage your time appropriately. Goals should take precedent over plans, so if you plan on seeing a movie this weekend, but you have a goal of taking care of the lawn, then the goal must be completed before you can fulfill your plans.
