Home Made Toys for Toddlers

Toddlers are so much fun. It is easy to keep a toddler occupied with homemade toys from simple items you already have around your house.

* Toddler Cars: You can make a really fun car using empty cardboard boxes. Your local furniture or appliance store always has some heavy cardboard boxes available. Cut away the top and bottom of the box and punch holes on the front and rear sides of the box. Attach thick string, old bathrobe ties, or strips of fabric to go over your toddler’s shoulders. Tie the ends to prevent the straps from pulling through the holes. Attach some decorated paper plates or paper circles as wheels and headlights. Draw racing stripes and windows onto your toddler’s new ‘car’.

* Homemade Playdough: Every kid loves playdough. It feels so good to squish it between the fingers and to create a masterpiece on a rainy afternoon. Using playdough as a homemade toy is cheap, it’s easy, and most of all, it’s fun. The internet is full of recipes for homemade playdough using kitchen staples that everyone has on hand. There are even recipes for edible playdough!

Homemade Toys for Pets

Don’t limit your home made toys to the kids. Pets love a good toy as well, and there are many things you can make for your pet from items you already have around your house.

* Empty Bottles: There is something about an empty plastic water or soda bottle that dogs love. It could be the texture or the sound it makes when they grab it with their teeth, but one thing is for sure, an empty plastic bottle will keep your pet entertained. Throw it around the yard and play catch, or leave your dog to his own devices. Either way, your dog will have a blast with this simple plaything.

* Old Soft Toys and Balls: Old soft toys and balls can be easily recycled and used as a new homemade toy for your pets. Make sure the seams are still fairly secure so you don’t end up with stuffing all over your home. If you have a big yard, you won’t mind your pet tearing this ‘new’ toy to shreds either. Soft toys are especially nice for young puppies who like to chew, and small dogs that aren’t able to pick up a larger or harder item in their little mouths.

Use the internet for more ideas. You will find that handmade toys are easy, affordable, and usually safer than store-bought toys. Involve the kids in the toy-making process and pass on the idea of homemade toys to the next generation of your family.

Have lots of fun!
