Learn How to Handle Rejection

Nobody really likes to feel rejection. It’s a bitter sting that hardens the heart and makes us begin to doubt ourselves. Rejection can turn a confident person into one with low self esteem.
Learning how to handle rejection is an important part of maturity and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a child or an older adult, if you’ve never learned how to handle rejection well, then it can have dramatic effects on every aspect of your life.
It’s not about you
Some people like to say the words, ‘It’s not you, it’s me.’ This has become kind of a punch line in a joke that no, it really is you.
The truth of that statement is that if you are rejected, it really is not about you. You may think the person that you liked and who rejected you was the ideal person for you, the one you would want to date and maybe eventually marry, for example, but if they reject you, then that says something about them, not you.
You are not going to be able to please everyone
There are people in the world who try so hard to make everyone around them happy. They do everything they can to make a positive impression on every single person that they meet.
The problem with this is that everyone is different. There will be people who like candy and others who can’t stand it. There will be people who love coffee and those who can’t stand the smell of it. The moment you realize that you can’t please everybody is the moment when you realize that there will be those who reject you. Shrug it off and move on – that’s one of the best ways to handle rejection.
Get up and get moving
When we get rejected, all we want to do is stay in bed and cry our pain away. The world seems much crueler and we wonder what we did wrong and why we were rejected. It seems much simpler to stay under the covers and hide away from the world than to get up and trudge through the day until we start to feel better.
Force yourself to get up, get dressed, and get moving – this is an important part of how to handle rejection, and you’ll feel better about everything soon enough.
Don’t avoid your usual places
If you are rejected by someone whom you liked or whom you cared about, and they tend to go to the same places that you enjoy, don’t stop going there and don’t stop doing things. Too often, a person who rejects another will frequent their usually hangouts because they want to see if they are getting to you.
Go out, lift your chin high, and even if you feel as though your world has crumbled all around you, don’t let the other person even think that for a second. Smile at them and walk past. It may hurt, but each time that you do it, you are becoming better equipped to know how to handle rejection.
