Possible Effects Of Single Parent Families On The Children
|
If the single parent is the mother, then the effect on the child is usually worse. Women tend to earn less than men and face larger financial problems when raising a child in a single parent home. If the child’s father is able to contribute financially, then the burden on the mother is eased considerably. On the other hand, if the father is the single parent, he will probably have a better paying job, but taking time off or working shorter hours to care for the child may be more difficult for him. If either single parent has a career, it will be difficult to combine that with child-rearing.
How about the effects of single parent families which arose out of divorce?
The effects on children of single parent families in a divorce situation are many. Even if the financial situation is stable, the children are often torn between their parents, especially if the divorce is less than amicable. Parents must try to reconcile their differences for the sake of the children and behave in a civilized manner towards each other; however, this is easier said than done.
The above effects of single parent families on the children do not apply to all single parent families, of course. Numerous single parents are able to raise children who attend school regularly, participate in sports, and generally thrive in much the same manner as children of two-parent families. The child and parent often develop and share a strong bond as they work together as a team, and the child (or children) have the undivided attention of the single parent.
These parents sometimes have a strong support group of family and friends who are able to help out, and are often able to spend more quality time with their children than parents in two-parent families. If such a support group isn’t available, there are many organizations such as Parents Without Partners and Solo Parenting Alliance which can offer support and advice to the single parent.
