Caring For Elderly Parents – Issues To Consider
|
Unfortunately, there comes a time in most people’s lives when they have to make decisions about caring for elderly parents.
These are difficult decisions to make, especially if they involve moving parents out of a much-loved family home or having to take a driving license away from a parent who is no longer safe behind the wheel.
It helps to make things easier if you have already had discussions with your parents about choices they (and you) may have to make in the years ahead. Your parents may be reluctant to talk about the possibility that one or both of them may need more care than you can give; if this is so, then obtain the information you need ahead of any dialog on the subject.
Discuss long-term care plans with them; are they interested in buying one or do they already have a long-term care plan in place? You should educate yourself about how different kinds of residential care facilities are run and ask for advice from friends who are already caring for elderly parents. They should be able to give you recommendations about care homes.
There are many choices when it comes to residential care for seniors, and you should know how to thoroughly check out each facility for the level of care they offer. Naturally, you would want to tour the facility and meet with staff and residents. If the residents seem to be happy in their environment, then the chances are that they are being taken care of in a kindly and compassionate manner.
My brother and I chose a small nursing home for our mother based on all of the above and also the delicious smell of dinner cooking! We just felt that it was right for her – and it was. We decided against one beautiful, new, purpose-built home because the staff were decidedly uncaring. It’s often a case of “go with your gut feeling” if you’re torn between several facilities.
