Common Body Language Signs You Could Interpret

Wouldn’t you just love to be able to ‘read’ someone’s body language and tell how they are really feeling? Here, you will learn a little about how to interpret some common body language signs.

Studies have shown that fifty percent of the information we receive from other people is from their body language, but we simply don’t know how to interpret the signals when we get them.

I have listed some general guidelines which can be helpful at a job interview, dealing with a family member, talking to someone you may have a romantic interest in or someone you are speaking to in a business environment. I shall take the body language signs from head to toe and hopefully give you some clues as to how people perceive you.

If the head is tilted, it usually means that the person is interested in you or in what you’re saying, but it could also mean that they feel challenged or confused, and this depends on their mouth and eye movements. If the head is overly tilted, it is often an indication of sympathy. However, if a person smiles at you while doing this, they may be flirting with you.

A person who lowers his head during a disagreement is probably accepting defeat or has a reason to hide something. If they do this when being paid a compliment, it can indicate shame, shyness or defeat. Note that in some cultures, the body language sign of a lowered head is a sign of respect.

If someone is nodding their head occasionally, it means that they are interested in what you are saying, but if they indulge in excessive nodding, they either disagree with you or have lost interest.

Staring someone in the eye implies aggression and this body language sign is interpreted as a sign of confidence, power or self-assurance, while failing to meet someone’s eyes shows a lack of confidence, and lowering the eyes signifies submission.

Did you know that people tend to blink more often when they are nervous? I didn’t. But I know that it’s a fact that looking up and to the right shows that someone is trying to recollect something, while looking up to the left indicates that the person is using the creative part of their brain. I had a friend who did exactly that!
