Common Body Language Signs You Could Interpret

Someone who glances sideways when you are speaking with them is probably irritated by something you just said, while someone who continuously looks around and doesn’t make eye contact with you is probably bored with what you’re saying.

Note that a genuine smile lights up the whole face, including the eyes, and is usually slightly bigger on the right side. A fake smile most often only uses the lips and will either be evenly situated on the face or slightly larger on the left side. Clearing the throat is often a sign of anxiety, although this could be attributed to a cold. Touching the front of the neck shows concern about what the other person is saying.

People who sit or stand with their arms crossed are closing themselves off and this body language sign indicates unhappiness with a situation. Although some people do this as a habit, it can be an indication of shyness or the fact that they are not comfortable with their appearance. If they stand with arms crossed and feet wide apart, this is a sign of authority. Arms resting behind the head indicate that the person is open to new ideas, or just generally laid back and comfortable. Hands on hips indicate that the person is waiting for an answer or impatient – how often did your mother do this to you? Also, clenched or closed hands indicate anger and irritation.

When it comes to physical attraction, the closer someone stands to you is usually an indication of how interested they are in you. However, cultural differences can dictate the amount of ‘personal space’ that is appropriate, so bear that in mind when trying to interpret such body language signs.

Touching your hand or shoulder while speaking to you is also an indication of attraction. Obvious signs of attraction are pushing the chest out – for both men and women – and pushing back the shoulders to show they aren’t afraid of you. If the chest is pulled back and the shoulders curled forward, this signifies that the person wants you to know that he or she is not a threat.

Body language is obviously not an exact science. Although some of the signs are obvious, such as tapping a foot to show impatience or biting fingernails which indicates nervousness, you should only use the body language signs as a rough guide to judging other people. Remember, they are watching your body language signs, too!
