Conflict Resolution Strategies To Diffuse A Tense Situation
|
Listen to what the other person is saying. Don’t stand there already thinking of what your response is going to be, and how unbelievably wrong the other person is. Listen. Then try to think of a positive way to reply. If you have been in the wrong, admit it. Nobody’s perfect and nobody ever ‘always’ or ‘never’ does or says anything. Sometimes, a conflict is the result of a misunderstanding – it’s really nobody’s fault – simply a lack of communication or an error. Once you realize this, everyone can apologize and move forward.
Whether your conflict resolution strategies are required at home, work, or school, you need to meet with the other party or parties willingly. If the problem is at school, then the school will probably have guidelines for you to follow when resolving any conflicts between pupils and / or staff.
Remember when using conflict resolution strategies that this is an attempt at conflict resolution, not a competition to see who wins the argument. Both sides of the conflict need to be prepared to give and take; the ideal strategy in conflict resolution is to make everyone feel satisfied with the outcome.
However, if you’re dealing with an abusive partner, co-worker, friend, or family member who is causing you untold stress, your conflict resolution strategies may not work at all; if so, the best thing to do may be to admit defeat, cut all ties with that person, and move on with your life.
