Dr. Seligman feels that anyone can be taught learned optimism and has developed a 48 question test to determine a subject’s level of optimism. He feels that pessimistic subjects have a greater chance of developing depression; therefore, learned optimism will prevent that from occurring and help the subject to live a healthier and better life.
It is sometimes difficult to keep an optimistic attitude when faced with all the turmoil, natural disasters and injustices in the modern world. Pessimists feel that they are being realistic about the situation and that optimists are living with their heads in the clouds by not facing up to what is really happening.
Dr. Seligman has made scientific studies that show that optimism is a better way of dealing with life and all that it throws at us. People who have mastered learned optimism tend to need fewer or no drugs to combat their depression. They may also lead healthier lives and exercise more – one theory is that body-building is a great cure for pessimism, but I’m sure that the reason for this is that a better-looking body makes one a lot more confident and optimistic about life in general.
Learned optimism is not simply a case of “mind over matter” or “positive thinking“. It is based on a series of scientific studies performed under clinical conditions. Be wary of “quick fix” offers touted online or on television – they are not going to work. See a professional if you feel that you need help with your pessimism and learn to be optimistic. Life will seem a lot better if you do.
