Learning to Pace Yourself is Important to Last the Whole Race

Have you ever seen a marathon or long distance runner sprinting off the blocks at the start point and going as quickly as he can right from the onset?

What do you think is going to happen to him if he tries to do that? Do you think he can last the entire race?

Chances are, he’s going to burn himself out pretty quickly, after which he will lose his competitiveness and not be able to find a way back into the race.

The lesson here is learning to pace ourselves for whatever journey we embark on or whatever task we set out to complete.

This applies to many areas of life. It could apply to one’s studies. Or one’s attempt to build a successful career. Or perhaps one’s attempt to put together a sustainable and profitable business. It could apply to one starting out on a healthier diet, or one beginning a disciplined exercise regime in a bid to improve one’s health and fitness. It could even be relevant to the kicking of bad habits or the instilling of good ones.

Sprinters can afford to push themselves hard because they know they are only taking part in a short, intense race. But long distance runners need to pace themselves. And just as long distance runners do not expend all their energies prematurely, we too need to learn to pace ourselves in various aspects of life, so as to avoid burning ourselves out too quickly.

It can take a lot of effort to recover from a burn out situation. In the worse case scenario, recovery may not even be possible.

So, whatever this applies to, be it one’s education, business, career, health, or other objectives, having the big picture in mind and going at a sustainable pace is important in helping you to achieve your aims.
