Time Management In Nursing – Useful Tips And Advice For Nurses

Time management in nursing is very different from time management in an office setting; if you are a nurse, you have to be prepared for emergencies that arise during your shift and allow time in your schedule to deal with them.

Your time management is therefore much more complex to arrange in an efficient manner.

Many nurses make themselves a “to do” list of things that have to be done on a daily basis with enough flexibility to allow for emergencies and for patients who need immediate attention. This can be done by downloading time management software and making a computer printout to use, by writing the necessary activities in a daily planner, or by creating your own list in Word or Excel – which is probably the easiest way as it allows you to make changes to your list as you need them.

To improve time management in nursing, it also helps to print out a list of frequently used phone extension numbers for the departments and doctors in the hospital and make sure it’s easily accessible and in a place where everyone can utilize it – this will save you a lot of time.

When you have made your list for the day, you should arrange your activities in order of priority, focusing on the most important tasks and placing them at the top of the list. Make sure you de-clutter your workspace as much as possible so that you can see your “to do” list – there’s no point in making one if you can’t find it!

By taking a few minutes to do this every day, you will find that you reduce your stress and save time; you will feel that you are more in control of the job, and by crossing off or making a check mark next to the task when it’s been done, you know that one more part of the job has been taken care of and you are absolutely sure that it has been dealt with.
