Use Communication Exercises To Improve Personal And Business Relationships
|
Another communication exercise for couples is for them each to write a short list of five things they like about each other and five things they dislike. This exercise should not be conducted in an accusatory manner, but in more of an open and frank atmosphere. We all know that there are things about ourselves that need to be changed or improved, and it also gives us the opportunity to tell our partner in a non-critical way about the things that we would like them to change. Keeping your language positive will help greatly, so try to avoid negative comments.
Sometimes, communication exercises are used in a business setting to break the ice when having a group meeting of people who don’t usually intermingle at the office. One suggestion for this is to have everyone choose what they feel are the best minutes of their life. This could be the birth of a child, a wedding, a promotion, or a personal success – or something really simple, such as watching hummingbirds at a feeder or watching a sunset.
Give everyone a moment to choose thirty seconds from that experience to indicate a lifetime highlight. The group leader will then ask each of the participants to tell the others about the experience and why it is so important to them. This communication exercise gives the members of the group an insight into each other and allows them to get a feel for what is really important to them.
Another communication exercise that is an excellent ice-breaker in any kind of group setting is to play the traditional “Telephone game“, where the participants line up and the first person in line whispers a short anecdote or story to the next person in line. This person in turn whispers it to the person next to them, and so on until the last person in line has been told. That person then repeats what has been whispered and that version of the story is compared to the original. If you have ever played this game, you will know that the end version is nothing like the original version. A lesson in communication if ever there was one!
