There are several forms of communication that you can use to get your point across. The most obvious is through speaking or writing; however, there is a very powerful communicator that you may not be aware of: body language.
We all use body language in communication; however, we may not be aware of the message we are trying to convey. Because body language is so common, we are often unaware of our own. Body language in communication is a great way to get the “real” message when we are communicating with others.
Body language can express many different things. It can show whether or not you are sincere in what you are saying, how you are feeling, and how important the message is to you. It can also show how interested you are in the other person.
Body language consists of eye contact, stance, the position of the body (arms, legs, and torso), gestures, and facial expressions. For example, if you are talking to someone and they are smiling, they are conveying that they are enjoying the conversation and your company.
For body language in communication, first look at your facial expressions when engaging in conversation. The human body has 44 facial muscles which are capable of conveying a wide range of emotions. Smiling is one of the most obvious signs that someone is interested in you and what you have to say. Similarly, frowns or creased brows can convey unhappiness, anger or frustration.
It is important to note, as well, that not all cultures read facial expressions the same way. You also have to look at cultural considerations when dealing with nonverbal communication through eye contact. While in the United States, making eye contact is seen as showing interest and respect, in some Asian cultures, eye contact is considered disrespectful and extremely rude. Facial expressions are a great indicator of a person’s interest in the communication.
