What Should I Say? Finding Good Public Speaking Topics

The biggest fear that most people have is speaking in public. There are several reasons why people suffer from a fear of giving speech; however, one of the main reasons is that they really don’t know what to speak about. They don’t know how to come up with a great subject on which to speak.

If you have been asked to give a speech, do not despair. The list of possible public speaking topics is endless. If you have been asked to give a speech and have no clue what you are going to talk about, do not fret. There are a number of ways you can come up with the perfect speech. There are a number of things you need to consider, however, before deciding on a public speaking topic.

First, who is your audience? You want to consider who you will be talking to. If you are talking to the local bar association, you will not want to give a speech on the latest cardiac medications. Conversely, if you are speaking to a panel of cardiologists, you will not want to give a speech on courtroom procedures in criminal assault cases. (However, with the right spin, both of those topics could be presented to each group respectively if you are knowledgeable enough to make it relevant to the audience).

Second, how much time will you have to give your speech? If you only have five or ten minutes in which to speak, you do not want to have a highly detailed public speaking topic. You will need to tailor your speech to fit your time frame. For example, you don’t want to give a complete history of the American Revolution if your speech time is limited to fifteen minutes. Alternately, you don’t want to pick a very simple topic such as how to tie a bow if your speech time is thirty minutes.
