While no one expects you to know everything, they do expect you to be knowledgeable about your topic. Don’t panic, though, because most people are only asked to give speeches about something with which they are familiar. If you have been asked to give a speech to a group, it is because they have recognized you as someone knowledgeable about the subject.

Fourth, what do you want to speak about? This is where picking the right speech topic is crucial. Make a list of possible public speaking topics you can speak about to your target audience. For example, if you are a teacher and you need to speak to a panel of other teachers about learning techniques, you have several areas from which to choose including: classroom size and teaching, dynamics of domestic violence on learning styles, learning disabilities and how to combat those, and a host of other areas.

If you are a law enforcement officer talking to a community watch group, public speaking topics could include: updating your home security system, how the police department works, what you can do to be safe at home or in the community, how to organize your community watch, and safety tips.
